editorial final draft

The gate closing on the top parking lot at Eastview High School is a controversial matter, to say the least. In January 2010 the administration decided to close the gate that blocks a road coming from the bottom parking lot to the top parking lot from 7:00-7:30 am and 2:00-2:45 pm every school day. Their reasoning behind it was that it will create more flow in the traffic everyday. Between 7:00-7:30 and 2:00-2:45 is the busiest time for the roads around Eastview High School due to students coming and going from school. There is absolutely no reason to close the gate and it does no good for anybody. As my friend Hunter said, “think of it like this, if there are two holes in a bucket as opposed to one hole, the water will drain faster with two holes then with one hole, so why plug up the one hole”? He is referring to the traffic as water and the gate as the hole. In the morning now, the line for the light to turn left into the school parking lot extends about two blocks back to the light at the street before it with the line for the top lot for parents extending just about ten cars long. I understand where the administration is coming from in a sense, when the gate is open in the morning students wait in the line for the top parking lot and then turn right to go down into the bottom lot, causing constant stopping and slowing down for cars behind. But having the gate closed, the traffic is so uneven for both turns that it makes no sense to “close up one of the holes”. The administration needs to reconsider their decision to close the gate and consider the students coming to school, and not just try to please the parents of the students. Having the gate closed and making the line longer for the left turn lane will just cause accidents and fender benders, I have seen many close calls since the gate has been closed. Opening the gate back up is the only smart decision for the administration to make.

Feature story

The recent “Twilight phenomenon” has affected many fans of the movie Twilight. With New Moon selling $69.6 million in its first days, and Twilight selling $70.5 million in its first weekend, the third installment of the series, Eclipse is sure to be a hit. The book series Twilight has been a hit among teen girls, and women since its debut in 2005. There are four books in the series, Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Ever since mid 2008 the series have gotten extremely popular and sales of the books have sky rocketed. The series has a different appeal then other romance novels to, realism. The series are written so well that the reader is falling in love with Edward right along with Bella. The immense detail in the books draws readers in and pulls them deeper and deeper into the story. The vampire family, even though they are vampires they are very realistic and relatable. Bella is a stereotype teenage girl. All girls can relate to Bella and all guys can look up to Edward. The story starts out when Bella moves from Arizona to Forks, Washington to live with her dad. She is seated next to Edward Cullen at lunch and they begin talking. Her new friends at her new school are skeptical against her and Edward because he is very hard to get to know and he never opens up to anybody. Throughout the story they fall in love and he reveals his family’s secret of them being vampires. The story is about them falling in love and then later in the story they fight against the evil vampires Laurent, Victoria and James. All the while they are keeping the secret that the family are vampires. There has not been many romance movies that can live up to Twilight’s hype, or even any movie. There have been many different reviews on the second installment of the movie ranging from “I did find this film to be a little better then Twilight because of the romantic triangle aspect. That and the other plot developments add some complexity and suspense making the film enjoyable”, to “oh God, make it stop”. When I asked a friend of mine about her thoughts of the Twilight saga, she replied “oh I love the Twilight saga; I have never been able to not put a book down while reading it.” But when I asked my mom, she just replied with “I have never even seen the movie and I do not know where the hype and excitement is coming from”. The Twilight saga has many times been compared to Harry Potter. The same excitement and obsessiveness overcomes Harry Potter fans just like it overcomes Twilight fans. They have put down Stephanie Meyer, the author of Twilight saying she can not write “worth a darn” and does not compare to J.K Rowling. If you asked her fans, they would have a totally different take on those comments. There have even been religious leaders questioning the plot line and characters of Twilight. They say that Bella is willing to give up herself to a man and that the way they fall in love is not healthy and she gives up everything for him. Being a very big fan of the Twilight saga myself, I disagree 100%. There is nothing religious about the movie Twilight and if you can relate religion to this movie, then you can criticize just about any movie for not being a positive role model for young people. There is a lot of criticism that comes with a movie being a big time hit. The Twilight saga also forces readers to choose sides in the movie, either Team Edward or Team Jacob. In all four installments of the series Jacob is in love with Bella, all the while that Edward is with her, This causes a tension between Jacob and Edward and even Bella, because in Eclipse she is forced to pick between to two men. There are positives about each character and they make readers fall in love with either character. Jacob is safe, warm, secure and reliable. But Edward is rugged, strong, and attractive and is her first love. But after Bella chooses Edward, Jacob is still in her life because he imprints on Bella’s daughter, to be born in Breaking Dawn, Reneesme. The rivalry between the wolves and vampires is a very important one; it brings mystery in the beginning of the saga and also creates a plot line in New Moon as well. Some people also say that Breaking Dawn “ruined” the series. Breaking Dawn is also where most of the religious criticism comes from. In my opinion, Breaking Dawn is not one of the better books that Stephanie Meyer wrote in the Twilight series. In the story Edward and Bella get married, and they leave for their secret honeymoon that only Bella does not know the destination to. They arrive and try to have sex because that is what Bella wants. But due to Edward’s violent and aggressive nature, they cannot accomplish it without Edward being in fear of killing Bella. But after a few tries they master it. Bella gets pregnant and the newlywed couple rushes home. They find out that the baby is half vampire and half human, and while Bella is in labor the very strong baby begins to kill her. Edward has to bite her and expose her to his venom in order to keep her alive, therefore turning her into a vampire. That is what gets most criticism, that the book is too violent and shows an example of a woman doing anything to please her husband and that she gave up everything for Edward. As a Twilight fanatic fan myself, I can relate to everybody that is anticipating Eclipse, due for release in theatres June 30th, 2010 and understand why everybody can fall in love with Twilight so easily. It is everything you would even want in a book and movie all in one. You have romance, suspense, action and in some parts horror. It brings all those genres together very well. With sales from New Moon even higher then Twilight, I expect that Eclipse will break the box office. Everybody has something they can relate to in the Twilight series and with the Twilight phenomenon under full swing, why not check it out for yourself and see if you are truly a Twilight fanatic, just like me?

News Story

With fourth quarter approaching, seniors are starting to keep their eyes on the end of the year and especially June 5th, graduation. But despite the excitement of graduation, there is a long time rule that may keep graduate's family and friends from attending the ceremony. When the decision is made to have graduation indoors or outdoors, the administration is also making the choice whether or not to require tickets to attend the ceremony. A week before graduation students are each given three tickets to graduation for their family members. If the ceremony is indoors, then only a maximum of three people for each student can attend the ceremony. But if the ceremony is outdoors, there is no need for a ticket to attend. Outdoor graduation is much more preferred with students because of the fact that it would be outside in the nice weather not cooped up in a gym, but also that they don't have a limit of guests who can come. When I asked Brittany Leeder what the school could do to make attendance easier for families she replied "maybe have the ceremony at a different facility that fits more people". That is a very smart idea and would solve the problem of having too many family members attend. This rule especially affects graduates with big families, like Ben Parranto who graduated in 2009. "I have 4 sisters and both my grandparents wanted to come, but since graduation was indoors, only my mom, dad and grandma could attend". When asked both Ben and Brittany were hoping for graduation outdoors for their own graduation ceremony. When I asked a faculty member the reason behind the three ticket rule they replied "this rule is enforced so the gym does not exceed its capacity and the gym does not become so crowded it is uncomfortable". Which is totally understandable. Being apart of a large graduating vlass has its adavantages and its disadvantages, such as not being able to have all your family and friends attend your graduation ceremony. But as it turns out Eastview is not the only school that has this three ticket maximum rule. There are many other highschools around the country with the same policy. The policy is totally justifiable and reasonable but it is very inconvienient to students and their familes. When asked, students at Eastview like Brittany Leeder also thought the same of the rule, reasonable but inconvienent. "There may be students who will not be using all three of their tickets to graduation so I encourage students in need of extra tickets to ask around for others students' uneeded tickets" explains a staff member at EVHS. The three ticket rule raises much controversy over big families, or just students who need those extra tickets for extended family members or friends. "My mom and dad will for sure be coming along but about my three siblings, I guess they will have to work that out themselves, Brittany Leeder replied when asked how she will decide on who in her family will get to attend the ceremony. She also thinks that the reason the school is so hesistant to have it outdoors is fear of the weather going wrong, or the climate being too unfortable to sit in for a long period of time. The positives definatly outweigh the negatives for outside graduation. With March being in full swing, we'll just have to wait and see which way the school decides for the 2010 graduation ceremony.

Interview Questions

Interview #1 Brittany Leeder

1. What do you think about the 3 ticket maximum rule for indoor graduation?

Writing a news story

1. What can I write about? What is news?

Choosing what's news can be harder.

The reporter chooses stories from the flood of information and events happening in the world and in their community. Stories are normally selected because of their importance, emotion, impact, timeliness and interest. Note: all these factors do NOT have to coincide in each and every story!

2. Identify what kind of a story it is

Hard news (+/- 600 words): This is how journalists refer to news of the day. It is a chronicle of current events/incidents and is the most common news style on the front page of your typical newspaper.

It starts with a summary lead. What happened? Where? When? To/by whom? Why? (The journalist's 5 W's). It must be kept brief and simple, because the purpose of the rest of the story will be to elaborate on this lead.

Keep the writing clean and uncluttered. Most important, give the readers the information they need. If the federal government announced a new major youth initiative yesterday, that's today's hard news.

Soft news (+/-600 words): This is a term for all the news that isn't time-sensitive. Soft news includes profiles of people, programs or organizations. As we discussed earlier, the "lead" is more literary. Most of YPP's news content is soft news.

Feature (+/-1500 words): A news feature takes one step back from the headlines. It explores an issue. News features are less time-sensitive than hard news but no less newsworthy. They can be an effective way to write about complex issues too large for the terse style of a hard news item. Street kids are a perfect example. The stories of their individual lives are full of complexities which can be reflected in a longer piece.

Features are journalism's shopping center. They're full of interesting people, ideas, color, lights, action and energy. Storytelling at its height! A good feature is about the people in your community and their struggles, victories and defeats. A feature takes a certain angle (i.e. Black youth returning to church) and explores it by interviewing the people involved and drawing conclusions from that information. The writer takes an important issue of the day and explains it to the reader through comments from people involved in the story.

Hint: Remember to "balance" your story. Present the opinions of people on both sides of an issue and let the readers make their own decision on who to believe. No personal opinions are allowed. The quotes from the people you interview make up the story. You are the narrator.

Editorial: The editorial expresses an opinion. The editorial page of the newspaper lets the writer comment on issues in the news. All editorials are personal but the topics must still be relevant to the reader.

The structure of a news story (hard & soft news & features) is simple: a lead and the body.

The lead
One of the most important elements of news writing is the opening paragraph or two of the story. Journalists refer to this as the "lead," and its function is to summarize the story and/or to draw the reader in (depending on whether it is a "hard" or "soft" news story - See below for the difference between these two genres of news stories).

In a hard news story, the lead should be a full summary of what is to follow. It should incorporate as many of the 5 "W's" of journalism (who, what, where, when and why) as possible. (e.g. "Homeless youth marched down Yonge St. in downtown Toronto Wednesday afternoon demanding the municipal government provide emergency shelter during the winter months." - Can you identify the 5 W's in this lead?)

In a soft news story, the lead should present the subject of the story by allusion. This type of opening is somewhat literary. Like a novelist, the role of the writer is to grab the attention of the reader. (e.g. "Until four years ago, Jason W. slept in alleyways...") Once the reader is drawn in, the 5 "W's" should be incorporated into the body of the story, but not necessarily at the very top.

The body
The body of the story involves combining the opinions of the people you interview, some factual data, and a narrative which helps the story flow. A word of caution, however. In this style of writing, you are not allowed to "editorialize" (state your own opinion) in any way.

4. Further tips for news writing

Finding story ideas

  • Keep your eyes and ears open; listen to what your friends are talking about.

  • Read everything you can get your hands on; get story ideas from other newspapers and magazines.

  • Think of a youth angle to a current news story.

  • Research a subject that interests you ask yourself what you would like to know more about.

  • Talk to people in a specific field to find out what is important to them.

Newsgathering

  • Begin collecting articles on your subject.

  • Talk to friends and associates about the subject.

  • Contact any agencies or associations with interest or professional knowledge in the area.

  • Create a list of people you want to interview; cover both sides of the story by interviewing people on both sides of the issue.

  • Collect government statistics and reports on the subject get old press releases or reports to use as background.

Interviewing do's and don'ts

  • Be polite.

  • Explain the ground rules of the interview to people unfamiliar with how the media works - this means that you tell them the information they give you can and will be published. If they do not want any part of what they say published, they need to tell you it is "off the record."

  • Tape the interview (so if anyone comes back at you, you have the proof of what was said).

  • Build a relationship with the person being interviewed.

  • Start with easy questions; end with difficult questions.

  • Read the body language of the person you're interviewing and if they get defensive, back away from the question you are asking and return later.

  • Don't attack the source.

  • Keep control of the interview; don't let the subject ramble or stray from the subject.

  • On the other hand, don't let your "opinion" of what the story should be colour the interview. Always remember that the person you are talking with knows more about the subject than you do.

Organizing the information

  • Gather your notes, interviews and research into a file.

  • Review your notes.

  • Look for a common theme.

  • Search your notes for good quotes or interesting facts.

  • Develop a focus.

  • Write the focus of the article down in two or three sentences.

Writing and editing

  • Remember you are the narrator, the story teller.

  • Don't be afraid to rewrite.

  • Be as clear and concise in the writing as possible.

  • Avoid run-on sentences.

  • Be direct.

  • Tell a good story.

  • Tell the reader what you think they want to know.

  • Always ask yourself what the story is about.

  • Read the story out loud; listen carefully.

Steps

1. Find a topic

2. Find an angle

3. Collect info

4. Gather interviews

5. Write story

6. Edit
